The Blademaster’s Tale Commentary

One of the fundamental truths of human existence is that skills and talents are not doled out in any manner that might be considered fair. Some people are brilliant at their specific talent without needing to work at it; others have to work extremely hard to develop their talent to the point they can use it to live. Worse, perhaps, even the most fantastic talent needs training and development before it can be used properly. Mozart, for example, was composing from a very early age, and his compositions were remarkable right from the start, but his later compositions show very definite improvement over those earlier works. A person who is unable to receive training, let alone any material tools he may need, is unable to make any use of his talent at all. If the greatest potential genius of our era happens to be a young girl in Afghanistan, for example, it is vanishingly unlikely the Taliban will let her have the education she needs – let alone the freedom to make use of it.

This is true of Emily herself, of course. Her talent for magic did not manifest in our world (I haven’t decided if there is an underground magical community in our world or not – in any case, it is essentially immaterial to the overall Schooled in Magic universe). She did not discover she even had such talent until being yanked into the Nameless World and sent to Whitehall, where she received the training needed to make use of her undoubted genius for magic. It is also true of Adam, of The Cunning Man trilogy: if he had been unable to attend Heart’s Eye and thus gain access to the resources he needed to develop magitech, that would never have happened (or at least not in the same way). Genius is not just an infinite capacity for taking pains, as Thomas Carlyle argued, but access to the resources one needs to develop one’s potential. One reason our own world has advanced so rapidly over the last fifty years is that many more people have access to formal education and the resources they need to actually make something of themselves.

The Nameless World is far, far less progressive in this respect. (One of the reasons Emily and Caleb opened Heart’s Eye was to provide prospective geniuses with the tools they needed to develop themselves.) A common-born person with a low level of magical talent is unlikely to be given any training, not without getting themselves into enormous debt. However, magic is an important resource and so magical researchers are constantly looking for ways to make use of magical potential, even if it is too low-level to be properly developed.

One researcher at Stronghold came up with the idea of channelling magic into blades, bonding the blade permanently to the wielder and shaping their limited magic into a form that was actually usable. It comes at a price – their magic would no longer be remotely versatile,
